In order to present Europe’s forts and fortifications to a larger European public, international partners, together with EFFORTS, the European Federation of Fortified Sites and defence lines, and the Dutch foundation Stichting Liniebreed Ondernemen are forming a new yearly Europe-wide event : ‘European Fortress Day’.
In its first edition, in the European Year of Cultural Heritage, 69 fortified sites in 9 countries participate in European Fortress Day.
For centuries, fortifications have been used to fend off enemies. Today, our fortress heritage is used to welcome the public in a peaceful manner. European Fortress Day is the best way to show our Europe-wide diversity to its citizens.
Europe is a patchwork of cultural diversity, and we are connecting the dots: together, all over Europe, we are celebrating the first European Fortress Day. This year this event coincides with the European Heritage Days, organised in each country on a day in September. The common theme of the European Heritage Days is fittingly ‘In Europe’.
2018, the European Year of Cultural Heritage, is at the basis of this initiative. European Fortress Day is also coupled to the European Heritage Days. ‘Days’ indeed, since not all countries organize their Heritage Day at the same Day in September. This way your Fortress Day activity will be easier to catch on in your city or region.
